Synopsis:
Chrissie Iles will give a lecture on the work of Marina Abramovic addressing
the issue of contemporary art and social engagement that has underpinned
her work from the beginning, from her earliest work to her most recent -
i.e.. the 'House with the Ocean View' performance at Sean Kelly Gallery
and the 'Count on Us' installation at the Whitney. Following Iles Marina
Abramovic will give a lecture/ performance with slides.
Then Abramovic and Iles will open the conversation to audience engagement and participation.

Biography on Chrissie Iles
Born: British born in Beirut, Lebanon

Her specializations include film, Minimalist and process-based art of the sixties and seventies, and film and video installation. She is part of the curatorial team formulating the artistic policy of the Whitney Museum.
Iles co-curated the recent 2004 Whitney Biennial, and curated the survey exhibition 'Into the Light: The Projected Image in American Art 1964 - 1977’, a major exhibition of historical film, video and slide installations from the sixties and seventies, awarded a prize for the best exhibition in New York City in 2002 from the International Association of Art Critics.
Selected Career Highlights:
- Other recent exhibitions include 'Jack Goldstein - Films and Performance', Lothar Baumgarten, 'The Origin of the Night' , Lorna Simpson: '31', and ‘Flashing into the Shadows - The Artist’s Film after Pop and Minimalism 1966 - 1976’ (co-curated with Eric de Bruyn). Upcoming exhibitions include 'Michael Heizer: Actual Size: Munich Rotary', the first New York presentation of a large projective earth work installation by Heizer made in 1970.
- From 1988 - 1997 Iles was Head of Exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art Oxford, England, where she curated several retrospective exhibitions, of the work of Sol LeWitt, John Latham, Gary Hill, Donald Judd, Marina Abramovic, Louise Bourgeois, and Yoko Ono. She also curated two group exhibitions of film and video installation, including ‘Scream and Scream Again: Film in Art’, and the survey exhibition: 'Signs of the Times: Film, Video and Slide Installations in Britain in the 1980s'.
- Iles has published extensively, writing on the work of, amongst others, Gary Hill, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Douglas Gordon, Dan Graham, Matthew Barney, Yoko Ono, Sol LeWitt, Dan Flavin, Marina Abramovic, James Coleman, Marcel Broodthaers, Bruce Nauman, Stan Douglas, and Marcel Duchamp. She is currently writing and editing 'Art and Film', a book in the Themes and Movements series by Phaidon Press.
- Iles is an adjunct Professor at Columbia University, a member of the Faculty of the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, and External Examiner for Goldsmith's College London,. She was a Juror for the 2003 Turner Prize at Tate, London, and is an advisory committee member for the New York State Council on the Arts, New York.
